GEO is not a replacement for SEO. It’s a complementary discipline that becomes relevant exactly when AI traffic starts showing up in your own referrer logs.
What is GEO/AEO?
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), sometimes called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), is about optimising so that your brand is cited in answers from AI models. Classic SEO aims for high rankings in the Google results list; GEO aims to be one of the sources the AI model picks facts from when forming its answer.
The AI models that matter in 2026:
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) — largest global volume, growing in Europe
- Google AI Overviews — appears directly in Google search results for many queries
- Gemini (Google) — standalone AI assistant, integrated into Workspace
- Claude (Anthropic) — growing fast in Northern European B2B
- Microsoft Copilot — integrated into Edge, Bing and Office
- Perplexity — research-focused, cites sources explicitly
The practical difference: when someone asks ChatGPT “what’s the best Swedish VPS provider?” there are no ten links displayed. The model formulates an answer — and mentions perhaps two or three providers. Those that aren’t named don’t exist in that interaction. It’s a more binary presence mechanic than the gradual position ranking of SEO.
Why now?
Three data points that together make a pragmatic case for starting preparations now:
Adobe Digital Insights reported approximately 3× YoY growth of AI traffic to US retail during 2025. Similar growth rates appear in quarterly reports from platforms like Shopify and Klaviyo.
European markets follow Anglophone markets with a 6-12 month lag, a pattern observed across previous digital shifts (mobile-first, social commerce, voice search). Right now European e-commerce AI share is estimated at under 1 % for most categories.
Industry reports from Postnord, Statista and Eurostat show that European consumers primarily use AI for the research phase, not direct purchases. That means AI is already influencing purchase decisions even when the traffic doesn’t directly land via an AI domain — the customer has their answer before they even open Google.
Taken together, the pattern points to European consumer goods e-commerce reaching 2-5 % AI share within 12 months, and higher for research-heavy categories such as electronics, furniture, health and travel.
A note on the European regulatory context
Unlike the US market, European publishers operate within the EU AI Act, the DSA and GDPR. None of these directly restrict GEO practices — they don’t tell you to block AI bots or restrict structured data. But they do raise the bar for transparency and accountability of any AI-generated content you publish on your own site. That reinforces a practical point we’ll return to below: don’t let an LLM write your product pages without human validation. The hallucination risk is also a regulatory risk in Europe.
How to measure AI visibility
There are three main methods, and they measure different things:
1. Probing (mention measurement)
Ask AI models the same questions your customers would ask, and measure whether the brand is mentioned. “What are the best European e-commerce sites for X?” run against ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity daily. The result gives you a mention rate — a number between 0 and 100 %.

2. Referrer analysis (actual traffic)
In Shopify or WooCommerce: filter referring_site on order data against known AI domains — chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com, claude.ai. This gives you the share of orders/sessions from AI sources.
In GA4: create a custom segment that includes the same domains in the source/medium dimension.
3. SERP effects (indirect impact)
GSC (Google Search Console) doesn’t give direct AI data, but traffic changes on keywords where Google AI Overview appears can indicate impact. When Google starts displaying an AI Overview for a query you rank on, clicks often drop even if your position is stable — the user gets the answer directly and doesn’t need to click. That’s a signal that Google’s AI model reads your page (good), but the customer doesn’t reach you (less good).
Four foundations for AI visibility
a) Structured data (JSON-LD)
The single largest lever for AI citation. AI models read HTML, but they extract facts most reliably from structured markup.
Priority schema types for e-commerce:
- Product with
additionalProperty— attributes the AI can cite (size, material, origin, colour, certifications) - FAQPage on category pages — this is the strongest lever, AI picks answers directly and cites them almost verbatim
- HowTo for guide pages and product installations
- Organization with
sameAs— link to social profiles so AI ties the entity together - BreadcrumbList for site structure, helps AI understand how pages relate
b) AI bot policy in robots.txt
If you want to be cited, you need to allow AI bots. The most important ones:

Distinguish between training bots and live-citation bots. GPTBot, Google-Extended and Anthropic-AI fetch content for training future models. ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot fetch content in real time when a user asks a question. Live-citation bots give the fastest effect; training bots affect visibility on a longer horizon.
Common pitfall: Shopify’s default theme can unintentionally block AI bots through wildcard groupings. WordPress plugins like “Yoast SEO” or “Rank Math” sometimes have pre-configured blocks. Verify your current robots.txt — we’ve seen cases where companies believe they’re open but in fact block GPTBot via an old commented-out rule that’s still active.
c) Long-form content matching natural prompts
Classic SEO is built on keyword pages: one page per search term, short and punchy. GEO is built on scenario content: longer articles that answer entire questions someone actually asks an AI.
Classic SEO example: A page titled “Decking soap” with 300 words about the product.
GEO example: A page titled “How do I clean my deck after winter without damaging the wood?” with 1,500 words covering problem description, solutions, comparison of alternatives, product recommendations inline.
The second variant has exactly the format AI models pick excerpts from. Pillar articles with clear H2 structure (like this guide) are the most AI-friendly because the model can cite a single section without losing context.
Include product links inline in the body text, not just in navigation or sidebars. AI models read body content more reliably than menus.
d) llms.txt at the domain root
llms.txt is a 2024 standard — analogous to robots.txt — that points AI models to your most important pages and structure. It lives at https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt and lists:
- What organisation you are (one sentence)
- Your most important product categories (URLs)
- Your guides and knowledge pages (URLs)
- Contact and contractual information
Implementation takes 30 minutes. It’s the single fastest GEO action with measurable effect — several AI models have started weighting llms.txt in their discovery, and early adopters get visible advantage.
Common pitfalls
Duplicated content across domains. Companies running both their main site and a separate content domain (e.g. a blog on a different URL) without proper canonical strategy can unintentionally create duplicate content. AI models then become uncertain which source is “official” and cite it incorrectly — or not at all.
AI-generated text on product pages that confidently hallucinates. It’s tempting to let ChatGPT write product descriptions at scale, but hallucinations of price, phone number, dimensions or specifications are common. When AI models then probe your site and find incorrect figures, your trustworthiness as a source drops in their weighting. Validate all AI-generated numbers manually. This is also a regulatory consideration in Europe under the AI Act and consumer protection rules.
Lack of schema markup on blog posts that rank in AI but don’t link to products. You may have a perfect scenario article that ChatGPT cites — but if it doesn’t link to relevant products on your site, you don’t capture the conversion. Inline links in body text are critical.
Misunderstanding that AI traffic = AI mention. A brand can be mentioned frequently in AI answers without clicks actually happening — known as no-click citations. Measurement must cover both: mention rate (brand exposure) and referrer traffic (actual traffic source).
Action checklist
Concrete steps for the next 30 days:
- Audit your domain against the four foundations. Free at check.adminor.net.
- Add FAQPage schema to your category pages. A question structure (5-8 common questions per category) with answers in structured markup gives the fastest AI citation potential.
- Verify robots.txt. Remove any blocking of ChatGPT-User, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
- Create a pillar article per main category with scenario angle, 1,500+ words, clear H2 structure, inline product links.
- Publish llms.txt at the domain root — points AI models to your most important content.
- Measure the AI share of orders/sessions monthly to track the trend. Set up a custom segment in GA4.
What you don’t need to do (anti-FOMO)
- Don’t panic-buy AI tools. Most GEO tooling in 2026 only delivers value once you have the foundations in place. Tool overload creates confusion.
- Don’t tear up your SEO strategy. Classic SEO and GEO complement each other. Backlinks, page authority and keyword optimisation don’t lose value — they’re complemented by citability.
- Don’t expect huge AI traffic in 2026 in Sweden or most of Europe. For many categories it’s still a 2027-2028 concern. Build the infrastructure now, but calibrate expectations to your specific category.
- Don’t assume AI content solves everything. Letting an LLM write your product pages in bulk creates quality and regulatory problems faster than it creates visibility.
Summary
GEO is not a new channel that replaces SEO. It’s an evolution of how visibility is conceptualised — from ranking to citation. Most of the work (structured data, longer content, clear entity definition) lifts both Google rankings and AI citations. It’s not an either-or choice.
For Swedish and European e-commerce in 2026 the situation is pragmatic: traffic volume is small, but the curve is steep and Anglophone markets show where Europe will be in 12 months. Companies that build now will establish themselves in the AI models before competition becomes intense. Companies that wait risk being locked out of the answers when traffic volume becomes meaningful — and breaking into established AI winner-bias is harder than ranking new.
